Myopia Management
Careful support as your child’s eyes develop
Some parents begin to have questions when their child’s glasses prescription starts to change over time.
Short-sightedness (myopia) is common in childhood and often develops gradually. For many children, regular eye examinations and standard glasses are all that’s needed. For others, parents may wish to explore whether additional support could be helpful.
At Ladybrook Opticians, we offer calm, evidence-led myopia management for children who may benefit — always with clear explanation, honest guidance, and informed parental choice.

What is myopia?
Myopia, or short-sightedness, means that distance vision is blurred, while near vision remains clear.
It happens when the eye grows a little longer than average during childhood. Glasses or contact lenses correct vision effectively, but they don’t influence how the eye continues to grow.
In some children, prescriptions remain fairly stable. In others, they increase gradually over time. This variation is normal, which is why careful monitoring is often the first and most important step.

Myopia management is not required for every child.
It may be discussed when:
A child’s short-sightedness is progressing over time
Myopia develops at a younger age
There is a strong family history of myopia
Parents would like to explore options beyond standard correction
We will always explain whether management is appropriate, and equally when it is not necessary.

Our approach to myopia management
Our role is to provide clear guidance, not pressure.
We begin with a comprehensive assessment of your child’s vision and eye health, followed by a discussion about:
Current prescription and progression
Lifestyle and visual demands
Suitable options, if any
Expected benefits and limitations
You’ll leave with a clear understanding of whether management is appropriate — and reassurance if it isn’t.
Myopia management options we may discuss
Where appropriate, we may recommend one of the following evidence-based approaches.

Specialised spectacle lenses
These specially designed lenses correct your child’s vision while incorporating optical features intended to help manage myopia progression.
They are worn like standard glasses and can be suitable for children who prefer spectacle wear.

MiSight® 1 day lenses are daily disposable contact lenses designed specifically for myopia management in suitable children.
They correct vision while also providing optical signals intended to help manage progression. Being daily disposables, they are hygienic and simple to use.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)
Ortho-K lenses are worn overnight to gently and temporarily reshape the front surface of the eye.
The lenses are removed in the morning, allowing clear vision during the day without glasses or contact lenses. In some children, Ortho-K may form part of a myopia management approach.
Suitability is carefully assessed and discussed in detail before proceeding.
Ongoing monitoring and care
Myopia management requires regular review.
We monitor:
Prescription changes
Eye health
Treatment response
Adjustments are made only when appropriate, and management can be paused or stopped if it is no longer beneficial.
Does my child still need regular eye examinations?
Yes.
Myopia management sits alongside regular eye examinations. Routine eye exams remain essential for monitoring vision and overall eye health as your child grows.
Reassurance for parents
We understand that considering specialist care for your child can feel daunting.
Our optometrists take time to:
Explain everything clearly
Answer questions honestly
Avoid unnecessary treatment
Support confident decision-making
There is no obligation to proceed with myopia management following an assessment.

"Great with children and young people too. Highly recommend."
"So friendly and professional and really great with my nervous child!"
